Please Take a Piece

Please take a piece of my heart when you go
I gave you a piece of mine
The first time I saw your light shine
I was offering a piece
No desire to be brief
But wanted to get all the way beneath
Well underneath the top layer
The part that’s unique
That’s the part I’m trying to show
Through an open heart is how it does flow
Piece by piece I take it apart
Each piece I give, I get a piece of heart
The more open your heart the better
That is why we should share parts
Each part you give
Opens up your heart
A moment
A week
A month
A year
Eternity
Let’s not fear
No matter the time
Exchanging parts
Is how we open our hearts
I’m offering my piece to you
Please take it with
Put it with the other parts
Collect a patchwork heart
That way your light will shine
We will hold each other
We will serve the Divine

A girl taught me this lesson years ago
She offered me a piece
I didn’t even know
Year after year I would not let go
I cherished that piece
Thought it was the only one
Even when time took us apart
There was only her piece in my heart
Couldn’t see I needed to give
More pieces of my own
Not because it was wrong
Or I needed to atone
But, I needed to unlock my love
The lesson from above
Even though our time together is ending
I am being honest
Not pretending
Please take this piece
Like it or not I took part of yours
These are things you can’t find in stores
Please don’t be mad
Please don’t be upset
Believe it or not I’m glad we met
We’ve helped each other
Neither one of us set
So let’s exchange parts
I’ll give you a piece of mine
In return all I ask is some of your heart
